Gokiso is a Japanese brand that was created by the Kondo Machine Corporation, a company that specializes in ultra precision metal cutting. That experience, combined with the fact that Kondo is a leading bearing manufacturer for jet engines, led them to set up Gokiso and to create these revolutionary hubs.

The Gokiso Aerospace hubs are the result of aerospace engineering being applied to a bicycle component. Perhaps as a result of Kondo not having a deep experience in the world of cycling, these hubs are rather exceptional in construction and quite unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.

Gokiso’s website states that “our product makes you realize what the true value of craftsmanship is.” Lofty claims, or so I thought. However after riding these hubs I realized the verity in that statement.

Out of the Box

The Gokiso Aerospace Hubs came expertly laced to Velocite’s Noir carbon rims (a review of which will follow soon). Immediately the eye is drawn to the hubs, the pair which I received being a deep shining red. Even in Gokiso’s motif there is a cleanliness, a bold simplicity that comes across as evidence of a no-nonsense approach.

I don’t claim to be an expert in hub construction but after riding several other high-end and mid-range wheels that performed somewhat disappointingly, the Gokiso front hub looked reassuringly wide in diameter and the rear as though it could take a real beating.

The hubs’ flange deflection is adjusted by a washer that has an angular contact along the frame, and Gokiso note that the fashion for “slim and lean” hubs actually results in a shaft more vulnerable to deflection. The spherical washer and nut keep the hub straight at all times, so that there is no damage to the bearing.

Care is needed when fitting these wheels to the frame as the washer is loose until secured by means of a skewer - lose that washer and you’ll be riding nowhere.

Of course, as soon as any cyclist gets a new pair of wheels they hold it in hand and give it a quick spin. With a gentle push the Velocite Noir rim began to spin and seemed as though it was never going to stop. Hardly scientific, yet I’d never seen a wheel spin for so long unaided.

It was time to get these out and put them through their paces.

On The Road

Straight away I noticed a remarkable difference with the rolling quality of these wheels over anything I’ve ridden before. It is not an exaggeration to state that one firm push of the pedals will send you freewheeling down the road for anything up to 50 meters.

Once up over 30km/h, the bike that I’d been riding for the past two months felt like a new machine, one markedly more comfortable than its predecessor. Not that it was uncomfortable before - far from it. But with these hubs the ride was transformed. I literally felt suspended above the road, or somehow to be riding on asphalt that had been laid a day before specially for an F1 car.

So how does Gokiso manage to create hubs that can so transform a ride?

“With our 1/10,000mm Ultra-precision machining technique, we have improved the running speed with minimum force,” it states on the company website, “and developed our product to a record-breaking hub that brings cyclists the smoothest ride they have ever experienced.”

I would have scoffed at that had I read it before riding as marketing garbage, but the fact is that after testing for just a few minutes I had to agree.

That precision engineering combines with a spring-structured and elastic body suspension around the bearings with a 0.5mm play to absorb the shock of the road. The result is an internal system that minimizes shock without sacrificing rotation performance.

I race-tested the wheelset in a 24km individual time trial over an imperfect surface and the feel of the bike was just superb.

Two days later I tested a very highly-regarded set of deep-rim carbon tubulars (with standard hubs), and returned from the three-hour ride decidedly grumpy...

The Verdict

The best hubs I have ever ridden, bar none. They elevated the ride - both in terms of  performance and feel - more than any other component I’ve added to a bike.

The solidity of the hubs is immediately transferred to the rider, lending a reassuring feel in corners and on downhills. The comfort level of the bike increased markedly, as much as rolling resistance decreased.

Hub makers be warned - the future is here.

The drawback? Some will say the weight. The pair we tested are said to be a rather heavier than the Dura-Ace top-of-the-line models from Shimano. We used these though both for climbing and time trialling and they did not feel heavy at all. Rather, quite the opposite. We look forward to seeing some real scientific data on the comparisons in terms of performance between the Gokiso hubs and other manufacturers.

However, there is one drawback, and it's a large one - the price. At US$3,200 for the road hubs alone, you’ll need a large chunk of expendable income to purchase the Gokiso Aerospace Hubs.

Then again, they might just be the best upgrade you ever buy...

Efficiency is the name of the game. A bike that propels you forward with the least amount of effort is a good thing. The wheel hubs attempt to rotate the bike wheel as freely as possible, and Gokiso debuted what may be the world's most efficient hubs. Using their technological prowess in aerospace manufacturing, they created a hub that nearly rotates forever. And at $3000 a pop, they better. Look for this technology in racing bikes of the future, and hopefully someday your Schwinn might have them as well. But don't hold your breath.
